Hemp Textiles

One of the wonderful things about hemp is how versatile it is. Take hemp as a textile to make clothing for example. While it isn’t currently the top fabric used in the industry, hopefully with a little education we can see a rise in the use of hemp in clothing.

Kannaway writes, “Like hemp, cotton is a natural fiber, but growing it accounts for a significant portion (perhaps up to 25%) of the pesticides and insecticides sprayed on the world’s crops. Additionally, cotton takes extremely high quantities of water and only produces once per growing season.
Hemp, on the other hand, can be grown chemical free, keeping contaminants out of the local ecosystem and out of the final hemp products. Hemp can be sown close together and takes much less water than cotton. In some regions, hemp can be grown twice or more per growing season, further increasing its sustainability.” (The full article can be found at: https://kannaway.com/what-are-the-advantages-of-hemp-clothing/)

But as amazing as it is sustainability isn’t the only reason we love hemp-made clothing. How about the fact that as a fabric itself it’s a more versatile, durable and even helps protect you from UV rays? Hemp traders hit the nail on the head in their in depth article,”Hemp fiber is one of the strongest and most durable of all natural textile fibers. Products made from hemp will outlast their competition by many years. Not only is hemp strong, but it also holds its shape, stretching less than any other natural fiber. This prevents hemp garments from stretching out or becoming distorted with use. Hemp may be known for its durability, but its comfort and style are second to none. The more hemp is used, the softer it gets. Hemp doesn’t wear out, it wears in. Hemp is also naturally resistant to mold and ultraviolet light.
Due to the porous nature of the fiber, hemp is more water absorbent, and will dye and retain its color better than any fabric including cotton.” (The full article can be found at: https://www.hemptraders.com/Hemp-Textile-Properties-s/1881.htm)
With the rise in hemp popularity and hopefully the new growth of the United States hemp industry we expect to see hemp-based clothing rise in the coming years.
