Nutritional Benefits of Hemp Seeds

Hemp seeds, are they a fad? The new thing that will die out over the years? What nutiritional benefits do they even have when adding them to your diet? Hemp seeds as part of the diet has been around longer than you would think, records show that hemp seeds and oil were used in food as far back as 8000 BCE in China. Hemp seed is an amazing addition to anyone’s diet adult, children or animals alike!

“Technically a nut, hemp seeds are very nutritious. They have a mild, nutty flavor and are often referred to as hemp hearts. Hemp seeds contain over 30% fat. They are exceptionally rich in two essential fatty acids, linoleic acid (omega-6) and alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3). They also contain gamma-linolenic acid, which has been linked to several health benefits. Hemp seeds are a great protein source, as more than 25% of their total calories are from high-quality protein. That is considerably more than similar foods like chia seeds and flaxseeds, whose calories are 16–18% protein. Hemp seeds are also a great source of vitamin E and minerals, such as phosphorus, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfur, calcium, iron and zinc.” (Full article can be found here: https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/6-health-benefits-of-hemp-seeds#section1)

To break it down even further lets go straight to the USDA website for some nutritional facts.

For 1 tablespoon which is the equivalent of 30g of hemp seeds:

  • 166 calories

You can see the full chart for yourself here and their full website https://ndb.nal.usda.gov/ndb/foods/

As a whole, incorporating hemp seed into your diet is an amazing way to be sure you get enough Omega 3 and 6 as well as an awesome, easy way to boost your protein intake! They can be added into nearly any meal, my personal favorite is adding it into a daily smoothie!
